Fans can watch the India vs. Zimbabwe cricket match live online and see if the Men in Blue’s new-look squad can get off on the right foot in their tour of the African nation.
The teams will meet Saturday for the first One-Day International match in what will be a six-contest series. This is India’s second tour of Zimbabwe in two years, and will be India’s first action since falling to the hot-hitting West Indies squad in the ICC World T20 finals.
Saturday’s match is at schedule to start at 9 a.m. local time (7 a.m. GMT).
India will be bringing a squad mostly new to international play. The squad will include Manish Pandey and Karun Nair, with a number of other regulars taking a rest — Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Suresh Raina.
The series will also present Indian captain MS Dhoni a chance to mold what could be India’s international team of the future.
“MS [Dhoni] is very excited to be part of a young bunch of players,” Sanjay Bangar, India’s interim coach, told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s been a long time since he is getting an opportunity to play with younger players and pass on his experience.”
Their opponents will bring a more seasoned squad, ESPNcricinfo noted.
“Zimbabwe, on the other hand, have picked a full-strength squad but they possibly need to do better at flexing their muscles. The batting can hold its own with Hamilton Masakadza at the top, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine to control the middle while Elton Chigumbura along with Sikandar Raza can be depended to provide a suitably breakneck finish. Their problem is the bowling, especially against a batsman who can go on a rampage as was evident against Afghanistan and an unstoppable Mohammad Shahzad.”
Though Zimbabwe has more international experience, Bangar said the tour could be pivotal for India’s young players, which include a number of IPL standouts. Though there is some criticism that India isn’t sending its best, Bangar noted that they are all proven in India’s top domestic league — which is seen as the best domestic competition in the world.
“It s a great platform for the younger guys,” he said, via AFP. “It has provided a launch pad for a number of cricketers — Virat came here and led India for the first time (in 2013), Suresh came in and then Ajinkya (Rahane).
“We believe it’s a very, very important tour for the younger lot. It provides us an opportunity to look at the future stars emerging from the Indian scene for years to come.”
Those who watch the India vs. Zimbabwe cricket match live online could see some interesting pitch conditions. ESPNcricinfo noted that the Harare Sports Club has a “split personality,” with the new ball playing fast in the early hours — especially matches that start very early in the day, as Saturday’s does — but slowing later on. That could mean India’s new-look may could a bit of a learning curve to get used to Zimbabwe’s home grounds.
